Mission Week 2: Bundle Up Winnipeg
The following letter was written by St. Paul's students.
Dear Members of the St. Paul’s Community,
As we all know, Winnipeg undergoes some of the harshest winters this country sees. While most of the city evades the cold by staying inside, this is not an option for all. Every year many people get stuck outside and have to suffer amidst the fierce cold. In the past, many people have lost their extremities, and some have even lost their lives. There are over 1,700 homeless people in Winnipeg on any given night. After meeting many of these people face-to-face at Soup Kitchens, we decided something needed to be done.
We bought some used jackets and went out on the streets to distribute them. As we worked our way through downtown our supply was soon depleted. To address this issue on a a more regular basis and larger scale, we created Bundle Up Winnipeg, an organization committed to providing Winnipeg’s less fortunate with clothing.
During the upcoming Mission Week, December 4–8 and Casual Day December 14th, Maroon and White will be organizing a clothing drive collecting used jackets, sweaters, mittens, hats, scarves, and various other winter clothing items in addition to newly purchased underwear. These items will be stored at the school, and then organized and distributed by students at various soup kitchens across the city. We would greatly appreciate anything you have to give.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,
Matt Major and Riley Sierhuis
Members of the Maroon and White 2017-2018
