Career Day: Wednesday, 2 November

Grade 9 Students are participating in the Take Our Kids to Work Program on Wednesday, 2 November. Students in Grades 10–12 will have an opportunity to take in presentations on careers in engineering, medicine, dentistry, business, education, and many more. Over thirty St. Paul's alumni and several other professionals will be presenting at our annual Career Day. There are five career presentation slots in the morning and the afternoon will consist of regular classes in periods 4, 5 and 6. On behalf of St. Paul's, I would like to give thanks to Mrs Kolton for organizing Take Our Kids to Work, to Mr Hurton for arranging speakers for Career Day, to Mr Watson for his assistance with the online registration process for Career Day presentations, and to our many presenters for generously giving their time to interact with our students while sharing their vocations.

First Term Progress Reports: Friday, 4 November

Progress Reports are scheduled to be mailed on Friday, 4 November. Parents should receive their mailing no later than the following Wednesday. If a mailing is not received as expected, please contact Catherine Smither to request a report (204-831-2316). Progress Reports are interim reports which typically include a few smaller assessments such as quizzes and short written assignments and one larger assessment such as a test or longer written piece. Progress Reports are a "snapshot" of your sons' progress so far this term. Final reports for the term will be produced after exams in January. Please consult individual course outlines for details on how term marks are calculated for each course. In addition, parents are encouraged to access the Powerschool Parent Portal for more detail regarding assignment results.

Upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled on the following dates:
  • Thursday, 17 November, 3:30–8:00
  • Friday, 18 November, 9:30–3:30
Once again this year, appointments for parent-teacher conferences will be booked online. Parents must have a functioning parent account in the Powerschool Parent Portal with their son(s) linked with their account in order to schedule appointments. Please contact our Vice Principal Academics, Mike Watson, for assistance with setting up your account. Instructions for booking conference appointments will be included with Progress Report mailings. School personnel will be available to assist parents with booking conference appointments as needed.

Mission Week 1: El Salvador Scholarship Fund

Thank-you to all families for their contributions to our first mission drive. With your help, we raised $4,500.00 in support of the El Salvador Scholarship fund! This donation will be very much appreciated by the students who receive scholarships this year. On our mission trips to El Salvador, many of our students and staff  have seen first-hand the tremendous impact the scholarships  have had in supporting students and their families in El Salvador.

Relaxed Dress Code: Friday, 4 November

Students are encouraged to participate in the relaxed dress code for $2.00. Proceeds are in support of the Crusader Basketball Program.

Traffic Advisory: Bower & Grant

Picture
St. Paul's was contacted by the School Resource Officer from the Winnipeg Police Services who works directly with Shaftesbury High School. They have received several complaints from students, parents, and teachers indicating that many drivers are not following the Right-Turn Only sign at the intersection of Bower and Grant. To this point, Winnipeg Police have issued several warnings to drivers making illegal left-hand turns at that intersection. Please be advised, that effective Monday, 31 October, Winnipeg Police will be issuing traffic tickets ($250.00) to drivers not in compliance with the posted sign. As a reminder, drivers must make a right-hand turn at the intersection of Bower and Grant during the hours of 7:00–9:00am and 3:00–5:30pm.

Junior Debate Tournament Results

St. Paul's High School hosted a Junior Debate Tournament on the evening of Thursday, 27 October. St. Paul's had twelve students participating, many of whom participated in their first debates. We hosted students from twelve Winnipeg schools including private Catholic schools, other private schools, and a few public schools. The tournament was made possible by the generosity of about thirty student-volunteers from St. Paul's who served as  speakers, timers, and judges. Many thanks to the tournament organizer, Mrs Anna McGill, and the St. Paul's Debate coaches, Ms. Joan Trimble, Mr Tyler Kelsch, and Mr Paulo Borges for their work in helping students prepare for the tournament. In addition, a big thanks goes to the Parent Guild for providing wonderful hospitality and to Dr Uzat and several students for assisting with set-up for the tournament.

Driver Safety Bulletin from Manitoba Public Insurance

From January through October 2016, 85 people have lost their lives in fatal collisions in Manitoba. The number of fatalities caused by motor-vehicle accidents has nearly doubled compared with last year. In addition, the age range with the most significant increase in victims of collisions, serious injuries and fatalities, has consistently been persons between the ages of 15–35. Worst of all – we know these deaths could have been prevented. Contributing factors in this year’s fatal collisions include speeding, impaired and distracted driving, and not using a seat belt. The following bulletin has been posted in the Online Community. Please take time to read the attached information and speak with your sons about safe driving habits so that we can avoid the most common causes of collisions and keep our families safe.

Grade 11 Bake Sale: Wednesday, 26 October

Our second bake sale is scheduled on Wednesday, 26 October. Parents of Grade 11 students are asked to bring baked goods to the Reception Desk on the Friday morning. Thank-you in advance for contributing baked goods.

From the Parent Guild

“You keep shooting. You hope it goes in, and you smile.” ~ Teemu Selanne

What an exciting weekend this is for Winnipeg! The Guild hopes that you are able to soak up the positive energy of the Heritage Classic in some way.

Next weekend will also be a fun one. If you have not already done so, please be sure to purchase tickets to the Parent Social Evening on Friday, October 28. Sandra & Mike Romani will be hosting SPHS parents in their lovely home on Loudoun Road, which is only about 5 minutes away from the school. Although the Guild is billing the event as an “Italian Games Night,” there is absolutely no pressure to play. You are more than welcome to come and mingle over a glass of wine. A two-piece band will provide live music. Please note that while food will be provided, we encourage you to BYOB. Tickets are only $10.00 and are available at the front desk. We can’t wait to see you there!

With regards to our sons, the Guild keeps on shooting to make them smile, too:
  • The Grade 12 Pizza Party on Monday, October 17 – Margaret Haugen, Elsebeth Hansen-Kriening, and several other Moms helped Father Altilia kick off the year for the Class of 2017. Each student received half a pizza, an ice cream sandwich, and a drink. As they ate, the boys voted on a graduation theme. It was a great lunch hour!
  • A Grade 11 Bake Sale on Wednesday, October 26 – As a warm-up to Halloween, Andrea Weber Ethans and her volunteers will be baking and selling sweet treats over the lunch hour. Be sure that your child brings a loonie or two. Trust us - the teachers love it when their students come to class full of sugar.
  • The Junior Debate Tournament on Thursday, October 27 – Barb Pichlyk, Fiona O’Hara, and other members of the SPHS Guild will provide snacks and refreshments to the competitors, judges, and fans during this evening event. We have to be honest and say that we hope it doesn’t draw 71.6 million viewers, though. We are good, but there is a limit…
  • Career Day on Wednesday, November 2 – Jennifer Moncrieff and her team will be in the building for hospitality. Presenters who come to St. Paul’s to talk with our sons will be given food and drink.

We wish the best of luck to all teams competing this weekend, including the AA & AAA Football squads, Cru Puck B, the Grade 9 Volleyball White boys, the Varsity Volleyball Crusaders, and of course, the Winnipeg Jets Alumni & the Winnipeg Jets.
Go, Cru, Go! Go, Jets, Go!
